Bulletproof, High Society, or Day Tripper?
Bulletproof, High Society, or Day Tripper?
Looking for opinions. These are 3 littermate boars. In case you didn't know, Bulletproof (Real McCoy) was champ york at 2008 WPX with High Society (Hoosier State) being reserve. Day Tripper is another littermate retained by Grimm (breeder of the litter). Now, if YOU were to breed one of your sows with any of the three, which would it be? Clearly between the 2 that were shown side-by-side, the consensus was that Bulletproof was the better boar (named champ and sold for $41,000). What about the one Jim kept?
If you read Jim's website he says all three have something a little different to offer. Of the three, Bulletproof took the best photo (in my opinion). There is also money to consider. Bulletproof is listed at $150, High Society at $75, and Day Tripper at $125. High Society is a good boar in his own right and from an outstanding litter. Maybe he was beaten in show by his littermate, but he should sire similarly and he is half the price. Would you use him? Or would you be more inclined to use the one Jim kept for his own stud?
Does anyone have any pigs of any size yet that they can comment on the offspring of these sires? I know someone with a few litters of Bulletproof, but they were just weaned. Too early to say much yet. May not be any indicator, but he chose to rebreed those same sows to Next Level this time.......
One more thing. The littermate gilts to these boars were quite popular also, selling as bred gilts (bred to Lumberjack). Anyone know how those litters are doing? This had to be the yorkshire litter of 2008.

Tuff choice. Ever consider using the boar's sire, Night Tripp? He has definetly proven himself.

Yes, I have considered Night Tripp. He has proven himself in Grimm's herd for sure. Are there other outstanding sons that I am not aware of also? I did research him quite a bit a few months ago, but I have concerns about using him which are unrelated to his genetics or siring ability.

This is just my opinion but I would say use High Society. I haven't seen any of these boars in person, but judging by the pics I think he has a little more to offer. Obviously they are all going to be similar because they are littermates but I think High Society has a little more depth of side and his ham/loin junction looks better than Bulletproofs. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the three, but for me it comes down to price when they are all pretty similar.
It's too early to tell how they are going to turn out, but I've got a litter of 13 by High Society that came last Friday morning. They are out of a York/Hamp gilt by Rubix Cube (at Triple B about a year or so ago). Actually, she had 14 but one of them came out dead. I had another sow farrow that only had 6 two days after the gilt delivered, so I successfully moved 4 of the gilt's piglets over to the sow. The sow is a milking machine, and the gilt's off to a slow start in that area. The piglets on the gilt are looking better every day, and the ones on the sow are really looking GOOD now that they've got some groceries in them.
That's what I'm curious about is Night Tripp himself what does he look like and what did he contribute to create these boars. I like Day Tripper for his completeness and I think he'll produce better females. Bullet Proof on the other hand looks to be the most powerful of the three. I guess my question is which one will add the most size and structure.
I got to see all three of these boars about a month before expo and then got to see the two boars at expo. When I first was at the farm, we really liked Bulletproof. He was just extra special, you could tell he was going to bring some bucks. All three boars were good, but Bulletproof was hands down the better boar. I think both Day Tripper and High Society are going to work on sows and Day Tripper will probably lay in an excellent set of females for Jim, but the best boar for making barrows or gilts is going to be Bulletproof.

Jim told me that he kept the boar that he wanted for himself, period. He did say that Bullet Proof was always a boar that stood out even in the nursery. It sounded to me like he was torn between Day Tripper and Bullet Proof over which to keep. He said Bullet Proof was bigger butted and figured he would probably bring more because of it and this probably was the deciding factor. He told me that High Society was a distant third. Like someone said before, I think Day Tripper is probably the most complete, all around boar that will probably make the better females and Bullet Proof is probably a little more showier and will make a bit better barrows.
I have seen all of the boars in person and the Best combination boar is Day Tripper. He has a rugged look to him, but still possesses a look that can produce maternal offspring. Mr. Grimm is a commercial/seedstock producer and Day tripper matched his operation the best. The boar that won the WPX was more of a show boar and the reserve WPX was just a powerhouse. Personally when I saw the reserve WPX, he didn't have enough look. The Stripptease boar that is at Kirkpatricks was the barrow producer in the litter. He had the barrow look to him. All the boars in that litter were good if not great. My personal favorite was a gilt in the litter. She was head and shoulders better then any other gilt on the place. I am not sure what happened to her(she got hurt), but I don't think she was sold as a bred gilt.
Nope, haven't seen them.
