Post by charliespigs » Mon Jan 07, 2013 3:08 pm

I'm trying to find a popular purebred York boar. Any thoughts?[/i]

Whether they will work on your sow or not, the popular ones are:

Moonshine (and his sons)
Final Move (and his sons)
Buck 50 (and his sons)
Snowplow
Big Splash

To name a few.

There are some not mentioned, but they are sons of the ones mentioned. (Moyer's boars, WOW, Triple B's boars, McCoy's boars)

I don't know whether or not he's popular, but my daughters used Benchpress at Grimm's on a couple of sows and so far we are really liking those pigs for the current trend. They're just turning 8 weeks old and looking really square and stout. One litter from a great old Tank daughter, the other from a Day Tripper x Glacier x Tank.

Wide-based, compact, heavily-muscled, looking like pretty good bone at this point. Don't appear like they'll have much frame, which suits the trend pretty well. The litter from the Tank sow will have a bit more frame than the other litter.

What do you mean if the boar will work on the gilt? This is my first time breeding.

He means if the boar will complement her traits.

for example: if you gilt needs more bone you would breed to a boar that will add bone. If she needs more frame size you would breed her to a boar that can add some frame.

So not all boars should be bred to all gilts. Need to work on improving the female's weaknesses while maintaining everything else.

what would you say are some of your gilts weak points and some of her strong points? With this info we should be able to point you in a little better direction then just telling you popular boars.

I would like her to be a little wider and have a little more bone. She is very deep and level hipped just lacking a little width in the rear.

I would stay with the muscle boars like the Final Move sons (Moyers & about every boar stud out there), Snowplow (Hi Point) and possibly Starbuck (Triple B)

Just got through studying this guy's pedigree. He is really interesting. Ice Age (which is a Mammoth x Full Dimension) on a Bulletproof x Big Papi sow. (Watson, Thompson Brothers, Grimm and Rodabaugh all wrapped up in one.

You commented that the pigs look promising. Since he's a new boar, I take it that they are just little guys right now? What type of sow are the good ones out of?

Really impressive in the photo. Anyone seen him in person? if so, describe him for me.
