Triple B seman quality

Post by Logandew » Thu Nov 02, 2017 7:40 am

Has anyone had an issue with sows not settling with seman from here. Had 2 last month that have been bred twice before no issue. Just wondering why they didn't settle this time?

We take a look at semen before breeding with it, often times running it though our CASA system (computer-aided semen analysis). While we haven't bred anything with Triple B recently, we've historically had very good success with their semen and their CASA results have been very good (good motility and concentration).

I know it's easy to point the finger at semen when your sows don't settle and sometimes you may be right. Before you do however, I would caution you to take a good look at the semen before you use it. If it has good motility and concentration (enough motile cells) and the cells look mostly normal (low percentage of defects) then you need to likely look elsewhere when they don't settle. Good heat detection and insemination timing, good insemination technique, low stress level after insemination (not mixing, moving or otherwise stressing the sow for the first 5 weeks), proper diet, nutrition, health, etc. are all very big factors in fertility.

We used Triple B this year (first time in probably 10 years) and had great success. We only bred four sows/gilts to their boars but so far it appears that all four are bred. I agree with Darin, there are a lot of factors that can influence the conception rates of your gilts/sows.

We have not had good luck with a couple of other studs this year but with most of those we were trying to a.i. hamps and getting hamps bred is not as easy as it should be. My belief is that those we didn't get settled was due to the our timing or the gilts have unusually long or short cycles.

Never had any issues with them. Don't think I've ever missed a sow when using one of their boars come to think of it. Great people
