Hamp boars cancelled pedigrees☹️?

Very soon will be ordering hamp semen for some sows and have been hearing that new genetic testing has found several boars that have a pedigree have been found to be counterfeit and have had pedigree cancelled.

I’ll add it’s well past time for the pedigree to mean something.

I’m not confident that I could get the boar list from either the nsr or a boar owner so I’m wondering if anyone who might have some facts on this if they would share.

I don’t want to breed a sow, farrow and sell pigs to a family next year and this come back to haunt me.

First thing you should do is get your sows tested to make sure they pass. If they don't pass, it won't really matter what Hamp boar you breed them to. I would call the old tried and true Hamp breeders and ask them which boars they have that have passed the test and use those boars on your sows that pass. All the rest, just breed for crossbreds.

Very refreshing email received today from the NSR on the issue.

Good idea on sow testing. This will set a limit on how many hamp sows that can be used to make public offered breeding stock.

I only have one generational hamp sow derived from primary showpig boars, my other hamp sows are true pure sows. My frozen semen and pigs sired by hamp boars from the 1990’s might just be more valuable today.

My first pigs from frozen Walridge based semen are just 5 months old. They look like Hamps.

Looks like most of the current Hamp boars are in the low 90% range.

NSR has recently updated their website with boar information. Check it out if you have not.

This is just fantastic public accountability. ALL BREEDS should do same. Ethics matter to some. Of Us.

Frozen boar I have used is first on the list (Walridge Trump) at 99% pure. Thrilled.

Have boars and gilts available now and will continue to fight the RIGHT fight. PM if interested.

Shortcuts have an inevitable end.

What is the acceptable percentage to be considered pure with the Hamp Asso at this time.

Admit I am very displeased with recent announcement from NSR to back up on common sense breed purity standards. So wish other breeds would stand up, grow a set and administer similar.

Ethics matter to some and should matter to all.

I for one got caught off guard by this because I don't breed hamps but decided to have a litter this year. Now I have to add all of this testing into it where it's going to run anywhere from 100-125 per pig. I go to look the hamp I bred to up and see if he's listed and I was told he's grandfathered in, however the firm that owned him said he died and looking at their site they only have new hamps listed now and tested. My hats off to Shaffers as they showed each of their hamps even if they would've been grandfathered in, only hiccup I had with looking at their site was all hamps showed the % but 1. It said grandfathered in, so if you tested all of the others why would you leave that one out?? Big red flag on that boar in my mind.

My understanding is that all hamp sires have to meet the 90% standard to record litters farrowed past a certain date.

As long as pigs are sired by a boar that has met standards they are eligible to show from what I have read, however, I could be incorrect.

So I've been speaking with NSR in a few back and forth emails trying to understand what I need to do with my litter. So if the boar is grandfathered in, which the one I used was, I can register my litter just as you would in years back. Now if I want to show a boar and hope to sell him I will need to have that boar DNA and stress tested. The gilts do not need to be tested as if right now but will come 2020. Now if the boar you used isn't grandfathered in and hasn't been DNA tested then you register the litter under a "provisional" litter papers. I didn't get any information on the difference or what happens if you test after a provisional label because it didn't apply to me. If you're just showing/selling barrows then you wouldn't need to test, gilts you don't need to test but if you're going to a show or keeping them for raising future hamps I believe getting them tested will make them more valuable I would think anyways. I'm hoping once we get past this initial wave of testing and gilts testing that if you breed 2 hamps that are 90 and higher then the litter won't need testing, we'll see how that's handle and how the papers read.

Just because both parents are 90 or above does not mean that all the pigs will be over 90. The average of the litter should be but if both parents are in the low 90s you very well could get some that don’t pass. This is one of the things that is concerning to me about all of this. It is making me rethink raising hamps. Hamps are hard enough as it is without adding this to it.

Just a good way to drive out the little guy. Anyone that thinks this will clear up things is fooling themselves. So if I sell you a boar or gilt that tested 90 or higher would you retest?? I can get one pig tested good get another hamps ear notched that same way, poof a pig with papers saying it's good but isn't. I mean hi point sold semen out of make it easy because it was labeled that way doesn't mean it is what it is. Just saying,

I know I have paid for rather expensive semen in the past and would be pretty sure the semen I received was not from the expensive boar. It is very real that cross boars where we have not been recording their dna profiles can be easily substituted by unethical boar studs. We all exercise our rights to not buy from any company you suspect of the practice.

This is now the advantage of the NSR breeds that require a dna profile submitted as if you are substituting and cheating the system you will eventually be found out. Certainly to your point you-can swap a hair sample for a short term sale but if offspring are dna different then you are at risk of being exposed.

While I don’t like paying $80 for the testing fees for animals this remains a very positive step in forced ethics for the industry.
