Are you looking for boars of any particular breed? What colors are you after?

I have a crossbred gilt- she is 1/2 hamp. Looking for some red/calico babies.

You could try Taco Bill at Shipley's Swine Genetics. He's a belted red, and from what I've seen, he does throw color. I'm not sure how gilt friendly he is, or if and how he would compliment your gilt, but you can give them a call and ask. The whole crew there is very helpful. Another one that is good, and ALWAYS throws color, is Lawless. He's also at Shipley's. However, he throws blues and blue belts, along with some black belted. Not sure if you'd be interested in that or not.

To get red pigs you either need two red genes or one red and one from neutral (Spot, Berk, Poland or Pietrain). When you say Hamp do you mean purebred Hampshire? What's the other half of the cross?

She has black sire and black grand sire and great grand sire on her dams side. Based on her pedigree I would guess she is homozygous black. The only other color you probably have a chance for in one generation is a blue butt from a white boar. It would take two generations to get red in there.

I will say it surprises us but we bred an all black lock it up x hilbilly bone gilt to ghost at PBG expecting blue butts and ended up with 4 red belts 4 belts 2 white and 1 blue. Also bred him to a silver lining blue mask and had all belts and blues. All kids were very nicely sized and came on their own on the gilt. Take that for what its worth?

For what it's worth, one thing we've discovered it that, when it comes to crossbreds, there's always a chance for a surprise in there. I know there's a science to figuring out what colors, or patterns, you SHOULD get when crossing two specific colored parents, but in our experience, like yours apparently, it seems like some random color will just show up from somewhere in the past on occasion.

Lairds just shared some pics of a ghost litter to their fb page out of what looks to be a hamp belted cross sow and looks as though that litter was about half red colored as well
