Pure vs. cross
Pure vs. cross
What is with all these cross breds? What has happened to the pures?????
i think it is all relative. i think for the most parts all of the breeds are as strong as ever. however, i think the exception has been hamps. very little effort is being put into breeding good purebred hamps because of the existance and quality of exotics. 7-10 years ago a majority of breeders were using purbred hamps to produce competitive bluebutts and hamp barrows. the evidence is at any purebred show and sale. the quality and $$$$ spent on hamps just isnt there anymore.

A great purebred ought to beat a crossbred. Excellant crossbreds are a dime a dozen compared to great purebreds.
Saw a berk barrow at a show last week that was flat out AWESOME. Should have been reserve grand, if not grand, and it wasn't used for either.
Where is it printed that you have to use a crossbred, or a york 95% of the time? Why not use whatever hog represents it's breed the best?

Agreed!
Here's a sad story from our county fair. We had at least one exhibitor that I am aware of with a purebred York barrow (with reg. papers) that entered the corssbred division purposely. It was an awesome barrow, capable of winning the champion york. So why enter as a xbred? This exhibitor whole-heartedly believed that this judge would not use a purebred for Grand or Reserve Champion. As it turned out, the exhibitor was right. Her york won her crossbred class but went no further. The champ york was worthy of Reserve Grand, but did not get it. Grand and Reserve overall went to the champ and reserve cross.

A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others.

maybe 10 years ago. now with the popularity of exotic boars, there might not be a purebred in a great cross pedigree for 8 or 9 generations. thus, the cross's are having a negative effect on the purebred industry,,,,TT wrote:It takes great purebreds to make great crossbreds.
