typically barrows win more shows than gilts do.

If you have strickly a market class, usually, gilts will be more competitive. Most shows, typically have classes for both barrows and gilts. Typically you will pay more for gilts than barrows. Most 4H shows in Indiana will not let you auction a gilt so in that case a barrow is best. You should check out the situation relative to your area and whether or not you plan to in open shows or 4H FFA shows.
Good Luck

a good pig is a good pig.

and it used to be a gilt would beat out a barrow anyday..

but now things are changing so much in the industry, and now its just down to which one is truely the better pig in my opion

Most people here in ky are showing gilts. That's also what the state fair champion ans reserve has been for at least 6 yrs. Every barrow I ever had, I couldn't keep it from laying on too much fat.

I agree that gilts used to win a higher percentage of time in a Mkt. show, however this year has seemed to be a little different. I have seen more barrows win or than any time since I,ve been keeping track, probably because the fact that a softer more finished pig is what most Judges have been picking this year, at least in my observatios.

I i believe gilts are easier to feed but its totally a personal preference, but a good pig is a good pig it does not matter if its a barrow or gilt. but in some cases like indiana and other states market shows are just strictly for barrows.

If you are in a fair where they don't have a gilt and a barrow show it depends on what the judge likes. :D
