County fair swine skillaton ????

Post by ginger_kid » Tue Aug 05, 2008 9:34 am

This is the second year my county's 4-h has did the hog project but this is the first time i will be showing one and there is going to be a swine skillaton that any 4-h with a hog up at the fair must be a part of what do i need to know for this skillaton or what else do i need to be working with my pigs with. I have my pigs train to walk around the arena good. so is that all it is.
Thanks,
Ginger_kid :)

You should at least know some of the basic swine stuff like gestation period, breeds, how to read ear notches, parts of the pig and cuts of meat. I don't know how hard the questions will be but you can find most of the general stuff on the internet. Hope this helps

idk if u have done the skillathon yet but i did at our fair judging and it was easy. they ask u cuts of meat, the five cuts on the pig,ear notching, breeds, how to read a feed and medication label and they ask u to say the 4-h pledge. i thought it was easy except for the naming the cuts of meat cuz for me they showed a pice of paper with bacon, sausage, roasts and those other cuts and they ask u to name 5 of them, but it's hard cuz the bacon looks like a hunk of meat and the roast barely shows the meat on it. everything looks like a part of the pig not the packaged stuff u buy at the store!
