Using your free hand
I had a question about what to do with your free hand. My first year everybody held our brush in our hand then the judge all told us to put it in our back pocket. The past two years we had the same judge and he told us to use our free hand to tap the pig on the back and also help guide him. This year we dont have the same judge so I'm not sure what he wants or if I should use my free hand. Any tips?

Does folding your hand behind your back really impress the judges. I might try that on one of my first shows

Sometimes the behind the back can get extreme if you are goin to do it make sure you are relaxed. I prefer to just let it stay closer to the front of my body. As long as you keep it close, also this way if your pig goes towards you or somewhere you dont want your hand is right there to put your hand in its face. Do not touch your pig with your free hand though. Just be relaxed in the ring, and do whatever is most comfortable for you.
Does anyone know what sound looks like anymore?

i personally don't like the look of holding your free hand behind your back. i've compeated at some pretty large showmanship classes and i used both my hands to help me. I keep a rag and a brush in my back pocket and try to use them when needed. holding your hand behind your back looks really unnatural. i don't find anything professional about it. just don't use it to touch your pig with. and if you run into trouble in a corner, i take my brush out and use that to push him out of that corner. just don't be touching your pig with your bare hand. i hope that you get into a groove of showing that you are comfortable with. and don't be afraid to do something different in the ring. just find a style of showing that works for you and stick with it. as far as showmanship goes, i'd try and watch a group before you if possible, and see what the judge favors. i hope this is helpfull to you. good luck
I know my oldest son, who is over 6 feet tall, tucks his hand in, as he crouches. Not holding a limp hand like you see many of the female exhibitors. He is an intense showman, so he just tucks his hand in ready to switch the show whip, or pull out rag/brush.
Try what ever feels natural for you. Good luck and remember every judge is different.
