This is my first year showing and raising a pig ( as i said before) So ya, i'm lost reading some of the other forum posts. LOL! But i will learn more every year i raise a pig. I like durocs too. A couple years ago when i was at my fair in lorain (ohio) i saw my dad's friend's kid's pig and it was a duroc. I thought it was so pretty and there r like none at our fair (same w/ spots) but they also have really good muscling it sems like. IDK though, i don't know much about musciling or anything to do with breeding pigs. lol i know this sounds ridiculous but i even think that boars look so funny cuz of their "breeding part" that wobbles around on their butt! lol!
I know i'm wierd- srry!

Are you wanting to start your own breeding program? about cody he just doesnt relize that i downsize every 4 years and retain the top 5 percentile of the herd which means i only retained 2 berk sows 1 spot sow. Heres my take. This showpig industry is focusing to much on having heavy muscled, grand champion barrows or 100,000$ boars. but everyone gets so caught up in the hype they forget about the sows and gilts and in the process of making these barrows and boars they make the gilts the same way. heavy muscled, small framed, un productive and slow growing just like these barrows. We need to focus more on bone, structure, correct skelatal angles, productivity and long muscle.(meaning muscle that extends deep into the hip and front) This explosive short muscle is what is really hurting this swine industry. It does not stay with the sow or boar through out its life and is what causes many pigs to have short choppy legs. If you want to get a trophy and money than go with the hype, but if you want a long lasting high performing herd than take my advice. And after time you can still acheive a champion gilt or high selling boar. Where it will most likely be sold into someone elses herd and will do an excellent job for them and they will refer their fellow breeders to you for breeding stock(which will sell for more than a barrow)And now im sure that someone on here is going to object. Our herd has averaged 10 pigs weaned in a litter for the past 7 years and a 4 pound birth weight for the past 5. and these numbers just keep getting higher. Also i have been raised this way and been influenced by alot very notable breeders. See what Im getting at here. So it would be really cool if you took my advice. And cody unless you know every little detail of my herd than your comments are not welcome. And if you do than i would love for you to come here and tell me. Hey GW where are you located in California?
