ringleader wrote:Are you wanting to start your own breeding program? about cody he just doesnt relize that i downsize every 4 years and retain the top 5 percentile of the herd which means i only retained 2 berk sows 1 spot sow. Heres my take. This showpig industry is focusing to much on having heavy muscled, grand champion barrows or 100,000$ boars. but everyone gets so caught up in the hype they forget about the sows and gilts and in the process of making these barrows and boars they make the gilts the same way. heavy muscled, small framed, un productive and slow growing just like these barrows. We need to focus more on bone, structure, correct skelatal angles, productivity and long muscle.(meaning muscle that extends deep into the hip and front) This explosive short muscle is what is really hurting this swine industry. It does not stay with the sow or boar through out its life and is what causes many pigs to have short choppy legs. If you want to get a trophy and money than go with the hype, but if you want a long lasting high performing herd than take my advice. And after time you can still acheive a champion gilt or high selling boar. Where it will most likely be sold into someone elses herd and will do an excellent job for them and they will refer their fellow breeders to you for breeding stock(which will sell for more than a barrow)And now im sure that someone on here is going to object. Our herd has averaged 10 pigs weaned in a litter for the past 7 years and a 4 pound birth weight for the past 5. and these numbers just keep getting higher. Also i have been raised this way and been influenced by alot very notable breeders. See what Im getting at here. So it would be really cool if you took my advice. And cody unless you know every little detail of my herd than your comments are not welcome. And if you do than i would love for you to come here and tell me. Hey GW where are you located in California?
HAHA ben chill i was just playin with you. And i dont think you would want the birth weights to get any higher because it would make it more stressful for the sow to push out the pigs. I finally see what you mean about long muscle, but you do have to go with the flow to an extent. I have always liked muscle because it is meat. It is possible to have a muscular pig that can still take a long fluid stride. If you would take your super correct sows, and gilts to a super duper chromed up boar you would infuse the muscle with the perfect structure and make hogs that WILL win hands down. Also i dont know "Every little detail about your herd". I am just commenting on things that i DO in fact know. And ben i do come to your house and tell you lol. About everyone forgetting about the sows and gilts, it takes a GREAT sow to make a GREAT pig. You could breed a super crappy sow the the best boar in the country and have average pigs. We make muscular gilts to make muscular barrows and boars. Now i wouldnt take a gilt that was really really tight and try and breed her to a really really muscular boar, that is just being irrisponsible. Now if i took a muscular gilt that could handel her muscle by being super flexible, than yes you could put them on a ripped up boar. The show pig industry is far from the commercial industry. The show pig industry focuses on making the most muscular, wide based, biggest boned, deepest bodied, soundest hog possible. On the other hand the commercial industry focuses on frame size and longetivity. Ben i have nothing against you and you are one of my best friends. I just think we look at things differently especially when it comes to show pigs.

LOL me and ben are good friends, we just like fighting about hogs. He sees things different than i do, he likes long muscle, i like short muscle. But that is how the trend is going. I wanna win, he wants to make a difference. I respect that, but i want to do this as a profession after i get out of high school and college. In that case i will have to follow all of the hype. But thats how it goes..right???
