Hi im new to this forum and fairly new to showing. Ive always bought all my showpigs off of a sale. Did pretty good this year at the shows i was at. Most shows i go to are in early august. Next year i would like to try breeding one of my gilts if i have some more good ones. When do i breed them? If she was a crossbreed york what would i breed her to? And anything else i need to kno. For early August shows you would want to breed mid to late October. You can breed her to anything, but york, hamp, and exotics are probably going to do the best in a market show. If your gilt has any weaknesses such as she isn't wide enough, then look for a boar that will add width.

For and august show you can breed anywhere from Sept 9 to like Oct. something. If you want breeding gilts you need to breed Sept 9 for Jan 1 pigs or early jan. if you want market pigs you need to breed for Feb. 1 or so. They will be at 270 +/- if fed right depending how you do it. I would breed her exotic. Make sure to know what to look for as a little pig. You dont want her super ripped up if you are going to breed her as she is more prone to having problems farrowing. Make sure that she has adequate vulva size and a good underline.
