help me get my pigs fatter!

Post by ashash » Fri Dec 11, 2009 8:34 pm

alright heres the deal. i have like 25 days till my county show and both my pigs (Sparky and Wilbur) need to gain at least 30 to 40 pounds to make the weight limit. they are eating at least one pound of 12116 bout 3 pounds of 12083 and then 4 ounzes of moorfat plus a pound and a half of moorbody twice a day. after county i go to fort worth and san antonio. what can i do to help them gain more weight but not too much for the big shows. i have like a month inbetween county and the majors. any advice or tips would be very helpful :D

So you don't want them fatter, but to weigh more (bigger)?

Try hand feeding if you dont, just feed littler amounts throughout the day. If you're willing to lose sleep do this at night too. You can also mix cake mix into their feed to make them eat more.

cut out the moorbody. If im reading what you said right you are feeding 4lbs of feed and 3lbs beet pulp if you get rid of the beet pulp and get them eating feed in place of that with feed you should be fine.

the moorbody is a filler it has litter to no nutritional value. The 3lbs you are feeding them if switched to feed would be about 1 extra pound of gain a day.

ok they weigh about 190. My mom says they need the filler though. So what if i give them less of the moorbody and more of the pelleted feed? would that work

If you want to feed a filler and you think you need it steam rolled oats are the way to go. They will give you fill but the pigs will still get something out of them nutrition wise. 3lbs of beetpulp is a alot they should be extremely full but that would explain why you need gain still.

   Ok whatever you say hogkid you dont feed beet pulp when you need gain. Plain and simple. Steam rolled oats will give you fill and a little gain. Pig needs to grow not just get filled out.

Hampy is right on. Beet pulp is something that you DONT feed when you need to gain like crazy...unless you feed like a very small amount for a little fill, but rolled oats are the better choice.
