To much to fast?

Post by bryy » Wed Jul 20, 2011 11:08 am

Hey, I have a barrow, he is a Febuary pig and my AG teacher didn't think his age would be a problem. She also informed me there was no weight limit to the Perry fair! So I wasn't concerned! Then my dad saw on the website the weight limit was indeed 280. We got our AG teacher to bring over some scales to the School farm! We weighed the barrow in at 205 and my gilt in at 130. We were concerned so we went to the local feed store and asked Kaleb (the worker who showed pigs) he said my best bet was to fix oats in with some starter pig feed. We fed him a scoop a day for 9 days and weighed him in at 210. and we fed my gilt 2 scoops of feed for 9 days and she weighed in at 145, is she on the right track as well? That was yesterday and there is 82 days left before show. Did we give him to much to fast or is there any hope? Help Please! (:

I don't know who your ag teacher is or what county you are from but somone gave you some very bad info. Market hog info can be found here http://www.georgianationalfair.com/_fai ... 0Swine.pdf weights etc have not changed much in several years. As far as the Feb, barrow my advice would be to ship him and find a April pig for the market hog show. Even if you're able to hold him he'll be so stale he'll never even get a look.

Are you showing your gilt as a maeket hog or as a breeding gilt? Even in breeding gilts there is a weight limit if they are not purebreds.

I haven't decided yet wheather to show it as a breeding gilt or not, we are going to wait and look at her closer to show. But the Barrow.. I actually have been trying to hold him but look for an april pig at the same time, its just really hard. Around here there are only a few breeders and alot of showers so it gets tough after awhile.

Seen these pigs, as a matter of fact we have 2 from them on feed. Haven't been over in a month but we left some really good pigs there. Great people to deal with and good advice when you need it, (even Newt)
