How Long A Pig Should Be Exercised?

Post by GoldenDoodle » Wed Feb 27, 2013 7:24 pm

How long should I work and walk my pig? My friend told me to put them on a treadmill. I thought that was a good idea so I don't have to work real hard on those summer days and the pig can still get worked. The treadmill is a upramp if that helps any at all. I have looked on youtube alot on how to do this but nothing that gives alot of info showed up. Also if you know any websites that might help me, that would be great too!

Dont put them on a treadmill, get out and work them! They wont know how to respond to a whip if you put them on a treadmill and if they slip and fall its a very good way of getting your hog hurt. Treadmill is a bad idea, do it the right way and get out and walk them until they really start to slow down and huff and puff. Each time will get a little longer. If its hot stay in the shady areas and carry a spary bottle full of water with you.

Have to agree with bigbridge on treadmill. We also walk until they act tired but increase gradually to about 30 min 1-2 times a day. Plus work on showmanship skills with pigs after walking.

Yet my friend has been breeding and showing pigs for 40 years and she has won many shows by putting them on the treadmill. Oh and don't worry. I will get them out and they will know what to do with the whip. :)

10 minutes every day is a great start. The longer they stay out the more muscle will gain, however you want to keep their cover and rib. If you have deep sand then your in good shape
