1. ALWAYS keep eye contact with the judge!
2. Pig must stay between you and the judge at ALL times.
3. Slow pace
4. Don't get too far or too close to the judge.
5. Make sure before it is showing you walk your pig everyday at home! Practice at home alot!

Have a damp rag in one back pocket and a brush in the other
bend down closer to your pig they say its prefered because it takes less attention away from the animal keep your eyes on the judge
know your stuff because when he asks questions you better know everything and anything about your pig breed characteristics and what you feed it, how you work with it ect,
stay about 10-15 feet from the judge
and the most important thing is to smile

I think they are right on the money when they say to work with your pig everyday. You can usually tell the ones that have been worked with. The pigs seem more relaxed along with the showman. I remember going to show and seeing pigs fight constantly. They just haven't seen the light of day very much and they are stressed out.

Ok, well I don't wanna brag or anything but I won senior breeding gilt showmanship at the MN State Fair, and I'd say the biggest thing to remember is to smile. When you first walk into the ring with your pig, make eye contact with the judge and smile. Acknowledge his/her presence, and always know where your pig is. Know the positive and negative characteristics about your pig. Try and keep the good side to the judge. One of the things most judges will ask is "what would you change about your pig and/or project?", make sure you know how to respond. Don't get too close to the judge. And PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE!!! You don't become perfect over night and you sure won't improve unless you practice! Make sure after the class you shake your compositors hands, this shows a lot about your character. Shake the judge's hand as well and thank them. Take advice from others! Trust me you don't wanna seem like a know it all!!! You won't improve unless you take advice! I always keep a brush in one pocket and a damp rang in the other. If the judge sprinkles shavings on your pig BRUSH it off right away, do not use the rag!!! I also have flashcards with pig info on them that way I can study!!! Stay update on industry news because a judge could ask about new diseases or things like that! Also its a judge's preference whether or not they want you leaning close to you pig... Some judges don't like it because it is kinda over-showing. So by doing it or not doing it, its a chance you take! Good luck in future shows!!
Sincerely, Rylee Schultz!

Some judges prefer a tense look instead of a happy smiley look. I prefer to just do it and show apparently I make horrible weird faces when I show.... mom always brings them out to embarrass me. but yes defiantly know anything and everything because most of the time judges will ask questions.

I know this is an older post but a common question this year for many jackpot shows we went to was know your ear notches and what they mean. Be able to tell the judge what another pigs ear notch says.
Take something good out of every experience you have.

Some judges like you to hunch over your hog, while others prefer the shower to stand up straight, I prefer the latter. Also, if you want to smile, go ahead, but I usually just keep steady eye contact with the judge. I think smiling draws attention from your hog.
Hope this helped!

Another thing I've noticed is that judges really appreciate being courteous to other exhibitors. That was our judge's big thing at the last show I was at...things like not cutting off an exhibitor when they're walking in front of the judge, helping close gates that another exhibitor leaves open....things like that!
