To Self Feed or Not To Self Feed That's the ?

Post by herewego » Wed Jan 22, 2014 1:11 pm

I have noticed that a lot of things have changed over the years.............Do people still put their show pigs on a self feeders for the majority of the time prior to show and then adjust as needed as you assess your progress? What's best practice??

If you are going to be serious about feeding/showing the only way to go is hand feeding. This way you can keep track of his eating habits, daily gains,etc..You can also teach him to "eat" by hand feeding twice daily, taking away the left overs 10-20 minutes after you have fed each time.

From personal expierence, the pig tends to learn that they can just snack whenever they are hungry and then never really fill up, just eat enough to get to their next snack. then you get into weight gain troubles. hand feed all the time is my theory and adjust as you go along
