SHOWDAY Feeding Program

Post by CourtKat » Tue Jan 15, 2019 12:53 pm

Been feeding Moorman's all year, with the exception of Essential Wide Open as filler/rib expander. We are considering the following feeding protocol for the day before and the day of the show. Will show 2 middle weights, 2 heavy weights. No weigh backs.
- Day before show:
o Morning:
 Regular feed rations
 Dextrose 10% added to feed (1.7 parts powder to 16.9 oz water)
 About an hour after dextrose, give 1 scoop 4-sure with lots of water
o Night:
 1/2 bag of Show-Prep
 Dextrose 10% added to feed (1.7 parts powder to 16.9 oz water)
 About an hour after dextrose, give 1 scoop 4-sure with lots of water

- Day of Show:
o Morning: (8 hours before show)
 1/2 bag of Show-Prep divvied out into small frequent feedings (every hour)
 Dextrose 10% added to feed (small amounts)
 Follow with water out of bucket

o 1 hour before showtime:
 1 part feed to 3 parts filler
 Dextrose 10% added to water (1.7 parts powder to 16.9 oz water) and 1 scoop of 4-sure

o 30-minutes before showtime:
 Water… as much water as they will drink

Anyone see any potential problems? Or have any additional suggestions? Our daughter has worked her tail off every day, all year and we want to make sure we give her the best shot on the day of the show! TIA!

Well you have it planned out pretty well. One thing to think of is at a show there are a lot of noises and lights and things that the pig may or may not have been exposed too. They may not eat or drink as you plan. Also I would suggest bringing water from home. This eliminates just 1 factor that could go wrong.

There are many different ways to go about this. I would say don't pull water from her. Always make some available. If you pull the water and then she decides she does not want to drink when you want her to you could go in the ring dehydrated or not as full as you would like.

Thank you so much for the reply! We had contemplated bringing our own water, and warming it like do at home, so now we have some confirmation! Thanks again!
