Water help

Post by Rampayge » Tue Dec 17, 2019 5:21 pm

So I am new to the forum and have been trying to search for some information about watering while at the show. My wife and I showed years ago and now our daughter has started. This was her first show. While we were showing we always used a water tube with a nipple. Now we were told not to use them by the ffa advisor because the pig will get water logged. We still used it and I think we can still control the intake amount. Can anyone tell me why we would prevent our pig from drinking while at show? A few others went out and made them after seeing ours and they were told to take them out. All of their pigs were constipated while ours had her normal movements. Any information is much appreciated.

Most of it has to do with over consumption...so like you said, control the intake. If you think about how you feel when you have a stomach full it's the same for a pig...they lose energy, can look bloated, etc. Also, I think there is a tendency to drink more when in the show setting because of nervousness and close quarters.

Thanks for the reply. That's what we were thinking but could not get an answer from anyone shunning us about it.

It's also important to note that if you end up using this method you should start practicing it before you get to the show so your pig is used to it.
