Hey-
I am 13 years old, starting a small scale farrowing operation, and love showing pigs. We built a show barn, farrowing facility, and nursery to accomodate my habit.
The only problem is that I need to learn as much as I can, as fast as I can.
I am willing to travel with my parents to camps/schools, to learn more.
Does anyone know of fall/winter opportunities?
HELP!!

Nate,

I alway's like to see young people raise pig's. There is a seminar that Lean Value Sires put's on the first weekend in september I think. They teach hand's on Artificial insemination, boar collection, heat detection, feeding, housing, etc... It's a very educational. I think some other boar studs have simular seminars. No matter how much you read, how many seminar's you attend, or how many people you listen too, the best education is hands on experience at your farm. I've been raising pig's for about 10 years and I still have questions every farrowing season. If you have any questions you can post them on this board and usually someone will have the answer.

Good luck too ya

Nate,

Great!!! Love to hear about young people getting into some sort of Ag Business. I would also have to agree with Del, there is nothing like hands on experience.

I’ve found that the breeders that I have been buying pig’s from are a great source of information. Call them and ask questions, see if you can go by and hang out with them. You may also find some sources of books and video tapes on a wide variety of topics including heat detection and artificial insemination procedures. www.foxai.com has some of these.

Spend a lot of time with your pigs, you will be surprised what you can learn just hanging around the barn and paying attention. I would also suggest that you read back through a lot of the old post on this and other web sites, any problem that you run into has probably been addressed on this forum.

Some of the people on this web site really know what they are talking about and it won’t take you long to figure out who those people are. Del seems to be one of them, I’ve used many of his suggestions.

Good Luck
