How to decide a good show pig
i am trying to find out how to pick out a good pig for the fair. I have never done this before but i want to try. Any help is appreciated. thanx
take a trip to some of these fairs going on every weekend and just sit down and watch the judge and talk to some Ag teachers and listen to what they have to say....Thats prolly the biggest thing, Listen to your Ag advisor....I know allot of people that just let it come in one ear and go right out the other and believe it or not they know their stuff. I used to not pay a bit of atttention to my Ag teacher and just do it on my own now that I am in college and have gotten some vital information from people I look back on it I regret it. anyway, watch what the judge does, listen to his reasons and whats good whats bad.....look at what breed of hog is winning the most classes for your area. Mainly just jump in and get your hands dirty and knowledge will come later on. Just do as your told andsee what happens...Good luck
Find it, Feed it, Fit it and WIN IT!!!!
ASU
Thats if you got an ag teacher that cares. We have one that is more concerned about getting to sporting events than helping with ag projects. I have had him tell me that he couldn't come by to look at the kids projects because it would make him late for a ballgame. He has no kids. Just Venting. Thanks
I agree with the Guest. My son has a Ag Teacher who only being in his 40's still need's to retire. He doesn't know anything about animal's. In his ag classes he basicly teaches how to build things. I know he built his home about 10 years ago, and used his ag classes to build it for him. How much ag does that teach the students? So I suggest if your ag teacher is a GOOD teacher, he/she will help you alot. But also ask anybody and everybody questions. Just don't mentioned names to people of where you heard something, due to if they don't like that person they will tell you something completely different, even if they agree, because you asked that person first. Also, when other people are asking question's, even if you are not in the conversation, listen, you might learn something, and READ alot.
I say ask the breeder lots of questions. My Ag teacher tries to help but wants you to think he knows more than he does. Id rather hear I dont know but Ill help you find out. He is more concerned about his son who shows. He told me all year how great my gilt looked she is awesome.
{It is my first year to show gilts.}I leave for San Antonio show In 3 days and now he tells me she isnt heavy enough. It is very discouraging. So ask breeders other ag teachers your county agent..........

there is soo much that goes into chosing the right pig. the big ones is pick a pig that will be well suited for your particular feeding program. talk to someone that really knows their stuff, you can't go wrong. and get yourself to either jackpot shows or even sales. you can see what kinda of animals float to the top. there is soo much that goes into choseing the right set of hogs for you. and if you only take one thing out of this, take this: it may not just come to you in your first year of what the ideal hog is, but give it a couple of years once you get acustomed to the industry you will have a better understanding and you will gain an eye for juding pigs.
