Hooded Hamp Classifications
Hooded Hamp Classifications
At our county show, we do not have a classifier and are expected to class our hogs ourselves. If we class it wrong, then we will be placed at the bottom of the class. Could someone please tell me how a "hooded" hamp should class... either the "hamp" or the "cross" class. I have one and we are very touchy on what to class her as. Her head is all black, with a total white body. However, we are concerned that her having a black tail and three tiny black spots on her legs will throw her into the "cross" class. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

wrmgirl the rule of thumb an old time told me once was if the belt goes back to the tail or isnt there then a cross it must be... I would put her in a cross class think of all of us we are not in your fair but we know what our fairs would do.. so please remember we are not here to make you put her in the wrong class... a cross class is the best place for her
show with your heart and not with your mind and you will make the right moves at the right time..
I agree, really it isn't the hooded head (which I would refer to as a Pinnacle hampshire - - named after the boar that had this), because if the rest of her was white you would probably be able to classify her as a hampshire. The black dots, as long as they are very small, shouldn't really be an issue either (as long as there small), since a normal hampshire may have small black dots found in its belt. The problem comes in with her black tail, and due to this, you should classify her as a cross. If she was registered, you would have a case and point to put her into the hampshire show. YD.
