I have a barrow this year, I have shown one other barrow last year and this year I have used a whip a pipe a stick and for a while, he would turn only to one side and then start getting very vocal and start backing up he now is not wanting to even listen to anything and I have to get a pig board in order to get him out of his pen and to get him to the arena. I have tried bribing him it has not worked I have been working with him since January and my fair is in may.

What should I do? Please help ASAP.

Patience and persistence is the key to training a pig. It's not unusual to have a pig that won't want to leave the pen. It's their safe space. Keep using the board and eventually he should know that when you come in it's time to go out. You may need to remove your pig a couple times a day. Another thing we do is leave the gates open while we clean pens and let the pigs wander about to get comfortable with leaving the pen. It sounds like you may have stress positive pig, also, which may make things a bit more difficult.

Don't hesitate to use the whip when the pig needs extra encouragement. Make your turns nice big arcs and not tight turn around type movements.

I would also recommend walking or training after feeding to help slow the pig. Hope this helps a bit.

Persistence. You have to be more stubborn than your pig. Just how the original habit was formed you need to create the new one.

Start walking your pigs the day you get them. If all you do is use your whip to move them around the pen, that is more than enough to get them used to your whip. Once it is warm enough for the pigs to walk outside, do not enclose them and make sure to get them away from the barn. If they begin to run ahead of you, hit your whip on the ground in front off them on tap them on the snout. Also, get them onto a routine. When I take my pigs out from the barn, they know that they have to go into the wash rack. From there the know the route. Hope everyone does well at their shows.

You can use treats not all pigs like the same treats so find out what your pig likes. You can use your hands to slap her/him just not to hard.

And what is the terrain that you walk your pig in?

Depending on the terrain you will have to use different techniques.

Hope this helps :)
