Maternal Sires

Post by Rjb6455 » Sun Jul 12, 2015 11:22 pm

My family started raising show pigs a couple years ago and are still trying to establish a sow herd. Do you know of any maternal boars to get our base herd established?

Pretty tough question. Most farmers wouldn't readily admit that their sows aren't quite good enough. What do you think about breeding York until you have a productive base.

Agreed w8frit. Takes a bunch of homework to answer that question, best bet would be boars that have daughters in production, most of the boars don't last that long anymore. Also, beware of the popular boars, they get bred to the most sows, so have the best chance of making a few good ones, but can be inconsistent. Talk to a breeder you trust, study pedigrees, find ones that have the things you like. If anyone tells you they have a power hog that makes great gilts, skip that boar.
