Spot Crosses

Post by Rjb6455 » Mon Sep 14, 2015 11:27 pm

I'm thinking about breeding to a spot boar for the color pattern to help sell this spring. I still want good pigs though and was wondering what breed crossed well with spots. Thanks

i've never done it, i would use a duroc just cause i think the red spotted pigs would look cool. i would definitely stay with a down eared variety though. if you don't you'll end up with some goofy looking ears on some.

It doesn't quite work like that. The spots and red color don't come from the spots or durocs. They come from the Pietrain hogs when they used them back in the 90's. Im not 100% positive on spots but im pretty sure if you breed a York to a spot theyre all white and if you breed a hamp to a spot theyre belted. Same goes for a duroc. Duroc red is recessive to everything. You will never get red pigs when crossbreeding to a pure duroc. The spots and red color in crossbreds come from the Pietrains back in the day.

I believe if you breed a Duroc to (Berkshire, Poland or Spot) the pigs should be red with black spots. If you search you can find pictures and old studies on swine color patterns. Good luck!!!
