Wrinkles

Post by Pigs2018 » Mon Jun 04, 2018 8:34 pm

We have a gilt that is starting to slightly get a couple wrinkles in ham/loin. (They are very miniscule now but concerned). Obviously, not ideal. But at 110lbs and 80 days to show is there anything we can do to get rid of them or reduce them? We feed Lindners and were feeding her 672 with some oats but was thinking of switching to 685 w some oats or even 688. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thx for any help!

in my experience the wrinkles come from a heavy muscled pig. I would drop the protein down to 16% and start adding fat to the diet.

Essential Uni4m is a fat supplement which will help to minimize the wrinkles / rough look. 2-4 oz. per day will help to "fill in the cracks" and smooth the ham loin junction up as much as possible.

Personally, I think you are way to early in the feeding strategy to be worried about fixing wrinkles at the ham/loin junction. Unless she is really hard made and overly expressive in her muscle, I would stay with the 672. At only 110 lbs, if you really start monkeying around with the fat in her diet, you will most likely shut her down on feed consumption. with 80 days to go, you need to average 2 lb a day to hit 270. Right now, she's only going to gain 1.5 to 1.75 a day at best just because of her weight. I wouldn't event worry about that issue til you get over 200 lbs. You can fix that issue pretty quickly from that 225 to 270 weight range. There are several fat products out there to use. We typically use a liquid fat product as we are typically slopping during that weight range. The key is to get a proper layer of fat cover and topside spread to address the wrinkles. Oats won't get it done. Oats are really good at assisting with expanding upper rig shape and middle.
