Not sure this is in right place, need guidance

Post by momagain22 » Wed Aug 01, 2018 12:09 am

My daughter bought a piglet at a breeder auction, from a breeder she has worked with for years.
She has turned out so well, that he now wants to buy her back, before state open show (which she is
registered for) and he is offering to pay for her and first pick of her litter.

She is a cross gilt and the breeder is actively pursuing purchasing her from my daughter, as well as the
feed supplier (who has raised national champions and oversees their feed/additives etc) and one of the
top judges are both super excited about this gilt...

This breeder is super nice, he is fantastic to the local 4h kids and has went above/beyond with advice/help and
guidance.

He wants us to come up with a price for the gilt and only asks that we treat him fairly.

How does one come up with a price for a gilt such as this?

I had a friend go through the same thing last year when his gilts turned out really well and he got $800 per gilt and plus a pig off of them if you have worked with this breeder continually and he has treated you fair I would say somewhere in the 750-1000 is a fair price for a gilt of breeding age. I have personally paid 500 for a few plus a pig off of them and it waorked well with me and them. I guess it also depends on what you paid for it to start with. That is my 2 cents worth hope it helps

Sounds like you have at least two buyers and at least the breeder wants to get her bought before she gets to a public auction. If it were me I'd want to find out how bad they want her and I'd forget about the pick of the litter. There are too many variables.

Public auctions are made to determine price which determines ownership. You just have to weigh the bird in the hand vs the potential at auction.
Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.

I would look at the price you need to obtain to make money over the price you paid and feed and supplements. Your time and effort for raising the pig is not free. That is the price I would ask for from the breeder.

Pick of the litter is a tough call. The best pig at 4 weeks old could turn downhill at 4 months old and then you are left with a feeder pig. What if this pig does not produce a litter that works for your time frame. Is the breeder going to allow you to have pick of the litter of any pigs that he has at that time. There are no sure things except the one that you currently have.

Well since you've worked with the breeder all these years have they ever tried to purchase one back?? If the breeder is actively pursuing and you have couple others people thinking the gilt is special then you might have something worth going to auction with. Breeder really wants her he can determine his price at sale, not very often does one get a shot at selling something possibly special, letting her go for 750 seems like a waste. There's a reason the breeder is after her before auction. Pick of the litter yeah, kick that out the window there's so many variables there if I done it I'd have to say pick of any litter because like someone mentioned may miss and have later litter or no litter at all.

Could be a memorable state fair if you roll with it and let the public determine the fair price. Just my 2 cents.
