Sow back in heat at 29 days

Post by SB farm » Sun Nov 18, 2018 5:15 pm

Have a sow that is coming back in heat. However, it's been 29 days.....?? What the hell does that mean? She has always settled for us, but she is starting back today...... Anyone have this happen to them before.

This is actually not that uncommon. She settled but then lost the litter. A lot of times it is due to not having enough embryos to support a pregnancy.

I had something similar happen with one of my girls. With that gilt, it actually happened 2 months in a row. She cycled on day 34 or so. The third month worked for her, and she carried her pregnancy to full term.

I would certainly try. It all depends upon what was the cause of losing the pregnancy. If she continues to lose pregnancies then obviously you wouldn’t want to continue throwing good money after bad. There are a lot of reasons that would cause her to lose the litter. Most of mine that have had a delayed return to estrus have gone on to settle after repeat breedings. If I have a problem breeder usually it is one that keeps coming back in every 21 days.
