Rebreeding

Post by Bigwhiskey » Tue Aug 13, 2019 10:10 am

We had a gilt that littered out in February. She has a lot of the show quality in her. We pulled every piglet. She was extremely swollen, but seemed to bounce back nicely. She weaned her whole litter and was a great mom. She has been in with our boar for three heat cycles and nothing has taken. I do know it could be the boar, but he was in with another sow and had no issues. My question, could she have internal damage but still show signs of heat every 21 days? Our plan is to put her in with a different boar and see what happens. Hate to lose her.

She could have some damage/scar tissue. Did you have to use a snare?

How did you get her bred originally?

How is her body condition? How much is she eating? The ones I've had trouble rebreeding have usually been ones that lose a lot of body condition during milking.

We used live cover. We did use a snare. After all pigs were out we cleaned her out with a warm antibiotics vagina enema several times. She got a shot of antibiotics. Her body condition bounced back. She isn't too fat.

Just didn't know if she would still show signs of heat and just not take. I am going to try to AI her and see what happens.

Just to be sure buy some semen, make sure it’s alive, breed her.

Plenty of show pigs never have a second litter due to breeding problems.

We have had sows that scarred up so much that you couldn't get an AI rod past the scars.
