Trouble Training Pig (tips or suggestions please)

Post by eucathepig » Fri May 26, 2017 9:09 am

I have a pig that has some trouble walking on it's own without the other pig. They have always been in separate pens where they can see each other. However, the pig is making a bunch of noise and not cooperating. The first few times we walked them they were together. I've been trying to solve this by walking him alone out of his pen in the barn. Then I take him up on the barn bank for 5 minutes or less, but he will not stay up there for to long. I might award him with a treat every time he does good or improves. Are there any tips or suggestions you can give me? Thanks.

The best thing you can do when training pigs is house them separately where they cannot see each other. We generally just have a wall between the two pigs and never have had a problem yet. The pig NEEDS to bond with the kid and not other pigs. Since this problem is already there, taking the pig out alone more often is your best option or even starting over by separating them better now and having the kid spend lots of time with his/her pig until the "fear factor" goes down.

The best pigs on show day are the ones going for a walk with their friend. If they are instead separated from their friend and going for a walk with someone they fear they will most likely spend the entire show in the corner screaming.

However, I had two boys keep their pigs together and although at home working was a nightmare the pigs changed drastically when they got to the show ring. The boys had gone out (crying and frustrated sometimes their mom told me) and worked with their pigs everyday no matter what. Sometimes you can out work the problem, but I recommend separating pigs in the future for better/ less stressful results.

If you are interested, I wrote a book on training and showing swine. The book is title Show Your Way To The Top and I included a link below. No pressure, but if you want tips on how to avoid problems as well as information on how to fix already common issues check it out.
Thanks for reading!

I find it interesting that you put a wall in between your pigs. I have never had a problem walking them alone when they are separated and still able to see each other. We had a problem when we penned them together and tried to separate them because one would freak out. They started to get used to it eventually too.
