Re: Moving pregnant pigs
The first trimester of the pregnancy is the critical time to keep stress to a minimum. I try to not to move them until they are 35 days bred.

Re: PCV M G2 timing
The reason some like to split the PCV vaccine into two is that they want protection as early as possible in the piglets. Under normal conditions I don’t think this is necessary. The other reason is some feel that by splitting the dose in two that they don’t get as many reactions to the vaccine. I us...

Re: Mycoplasma Arthritis Questions
You might want to do some research on mycoplasma hyorhinis. There is a new vaccine out called Inglevac MycoMAX. If you are having a lot of issues with mycoplasma arthritis you might look into this.

Re: Hamp boars cancelled pedigrees☹️?
Just because both parents are 90 or above does not mean that all the pigs will be over 90. The average of the litter should be but if both parents are in the low 90s you very well could get some that don’t pass. This is one of the things that is concerning to me about all of this. It is making me re...

Re: Sow back in heat at 29 days
I would certainly try. It all depends upon what was the cause of losing the pregnancy. If she continues to lose pregnancies then obviously you wouldn’t want to continue throwing good money after bad. There are a lot of reasons that would cause her to lose the litter. Most of mine that have had a del...

Re: Sow back in heat at 29 days
This is actually not that uncommon. She settled but then lost the litter. A lot of times it is due to not having enough embryos to support a pregnancy.

Re: Matrix for 13 days?
It all depends upon when in her normal cycle you started the Matrix. As long as you didn't start it just as she was coming into heat than she should come into heat 5 to 7 days after stopping the Matrix. You actually don't have to feed 14 days in order for it to work. Matrix is a synthetic progestero...

Re: Age of pig
Another factor is gilt or barrow. Gilts tend to grow a bit slower so I would probably steer away from the older barrows and only consider a barrow from the younger litter if you don't want to have to manage them overly much. Likewise I would tend to go with the older gilts all else being equal.

Re: Keeper Gilt Size
It all depends upon if her size is due to environment or she is just the smaller framed one in the litter. I have had gilts that just got on a bad nipple and got behind and basically turned into a runt. It took forever for them to catch up but they eventually do and they certainly don't pass on thei...

Re: Percent protein for gestation/lactation
Most gestation feeds are about 15% protein and lactation feeds are about 18%. The lactation feed is also higher in fat content as well.

Re: Videos added! Gilt walking bow legged, toeing in on rear
If it was me I would have her on something like a 12% sow feed. As basic of a feed as you can find. I agree that any judge worth anything will see it immediately. I have had some luck basically stopping muscle growth and letting their skeleton continue to grow. It won't make it go away totally but w...

Re: New Show mom needs help
What weight are you wanting her to be? If you are thinking 250+ lbs I don't see anyway that she is going to make that. Even if she was the right size for her age she seems too young for a show at that time. She is going to be a bit under 5 months at the show if my math is right. I always figure gilt...

Re: New Show mom needs help
She is pretty small for her age. Hopefully you have plenty of time to get her there. One thing to keep in mind is that pigs will generally eat between 3 to 4% of their bodyweight. At this point she is only going to be eating around 1 1/2 lbs of feed a day. When is the show that you are targeting?

Not to sound like a broken record but yes it sounds like a sunburn. I had a white bred gilt do the same thing about 2 weeks ago. She is in a completely covered pen but the south side is open. With the colder temperatures they lay in the south side in the morning in the sun and she got sunburned. It ...

Re: Feeding fat
In terms of pure cost soybean oil (vegetable oil) is probably the cheapest. It is 100% fat and you can buy a gallon at WalMart for something like $5. Just be careful, it is easy to go too much too fast and they will get pretty loose on you. Also remember that there is a threshold where once they go ...
