Re: Pedigree Questions for 1st time breeder
Geneticist here. List the sire then dam, ie Sire x Dam. Typically people only recognize the sires so everyone lists the Sire X the sire of the dam. When you want to list out more of the dams pedigree it is more conventional to list Sire x (sire of dam x grand sire of dam). So the piglets of your New...

Re: 2014 Houston Grand Barrow Clones
Cloning is cheaper than you might think, especially if you look at the costs of things in the show pig world. With the numbers of progeny he received, I would bet the costs were less than $1,700 per live pig.

Re: New antibiotic rules Hog Doc, KGB, Darrin
Yes it is possible to have a vet supply you with antibiotics for use in water. It will probably be hard to routinely supply it for preventative measures for show pigs. They really want the livestock industry to go away from having antibiotics in livestock "just in case" and want them to be...

Re: 2014 Houston Grand Barrow Clones
There is no sure bet as to which one will produce the desired phenotypes but they will be more alike than using even full sibs. Most of the epigenetic effect is set up while they are in utero. There might be some events that occur to animals later in life, but most are programmed during fetal develo...

Re: 2014 Houston Grand Barrow Clones
I have been on the road traveling and have to do a PQA+ Adviser training session in the morning. Outside a few spontaneous mutations, the DNA of the boars will be the same. However, there is this fun little thing called epigenetics that will cause different phenotypes even with the same genotype. Th...

Re: New antibiotic rules Hog Doc, KGB, Darrin
In my extension role, I am trying to get up to speed on the VFD and get producers ready for CSIA. From what I have been told, it looks like the larger companies will be able to handle it far easier than the small producers and showpig groups. A large company write one VFD for 6 months to cover all t...

Re: NEED MAJOR HELP / BIG BIG PROBLEMS
You say they are all on the 4 star vaccine schedule. Did you give them any vaccines after you purchased them but before the aborts? Did they all come from the same farm? Did they get exposed to other pigs either at your place or during transport?

I will second everything Darin said but also include some marketing classes and with the way showpig sales are going, might as well throw in a photography/video class.

Re: Stress Gene Testing Education for Swine Project Members (WI)
The test cannot be done on site unless you have a DNA extraction kit, PCR machine, and a way to read the genotype. The test is looking to identify what base is at the 1843rd base of the gene Ryanodine Receptor. They are trying to detect if the animal has one or two copies of either the base Cytosine...
