Re: White Cross
Crowd Favorite will take away some bone, but he makes them made very well from the side. He won't hurt you for body or muscle but to me he probably doesn't have the rib that it sounds like you're looking for. Won't hurt you any there, but may not help enough

Re: What breed!?!?!?
Yorks would be a good option to consider because you could then incorporate some of their maternal genetics into your crossbreds down the road if you chose to. If you had a York female you ordered semen for but then she didn't cycle as you expected you could put it in any crossbred without having di...

Re: Duncan Xbreds
I thought there were a pile of good boars. I felt like if breeders were to watch the show and if they had a particular theme in their sow base that needed work they would probably find a boar to help move them where they wanted to be. We try to build females perfect in their skeleton and add power w...

Re: Showpig Prices
I understand exactly where you're coming from. I just see such a disconnect between what some of these hogs go for in sales and the price of those sold privately, even if quality is close to the same.

Re: What type of education do i need to get?
I am in the process of determining what I will do for a career myself, although I am a few years older than you. I cannot reflect on as many years in the business as most, but my family has raised pigs for ten years and I am proud to have had a big part in every aspect of it since I was young. If ra...

Showpig Prices
I'm curious what everyone's thoughts are on the appropriate average price for a hog? We always like to have sales, because pricing always leaves us scratching our heads. We do not want to charge too much and put families in a bind, but I want to get what my pigs are worth relative to other breeders.

Re: Watje Blue Color pattern
Dark crosses at the majors are black and white, nothing else. Red, blue, sandy, or Watje blue would all get kicked from the dark cross division I'm pretty sure. They also must be 40% "dark" I believe, but that is pretty subjective.

The Houston barrow was out of an OH235 x Sunshine sow I believe.

Triple Threat
Has anyone used this Triple B spot boar? I really liked him at NBS and was wondering if anyone had hogs on the ground.

Re: Shipped wrong semen
Two things: (1) It could be a blessing in disguise... We've had sows we expected to breed to one boar, then her not stand but another one would and we'd breed the other sow with the semen we had on hand.. And in many cases that works better than planned matings that we put a ton of thought into. :) ...

Re: Showpig article in the Washington Post!
A major issue that I have with the article is it makes kids who don't have an ag background but still show look like bad guys. I was blessed to grow up on a farm and raise almost every pig I showed. I have very close friends who weren't afforded that opportunity, but would spend $300-$1500 on pigs a...

Re: Best York Boar to use on crossbred females
Private Drive is a good choice! Watch the bone on them. Untouchable makes them powerful and adds consistency to the litter in our experience, but we got a few more structure issues and not as good-looking as what the Private Drive hogs have been for us across the board. If you have a stout sow, I'd ...

Re: starting show pig business
I am a student at Texas Tech, majoring in Animal Science with a Business option, and have my Associate of Sciences in Agriculture from Connors State in Warner, OK. I judged/am judging livestock at both places. You learn a lot of about all livestock from judging, and meet some great people across the...
Re: BONE THUG
Now everybody knows boars from all over are bred to sows that are lets say less than Ideal, and when the pigs come out with problems guess what it's always the boar right! I agree with this, but I think it's also important to remember that more times than not these hyped boars are taken to a breede...

State Fair has a cross gilt show and so does Belton at the SWTC.
