Duroc on a cross gilt
So one of my gilts is nicely built but lacked growth all year. I think I will breed her to a Duroc with good rib and middle just to get some growth back in the pigs. Thinking Watch and Learn at Danner at the moment. Gilt is chromed up black and white. Not much grey in her pedigree. What do y'all thi...

Re: Horton at Shaffers
Totally agree with Swineguy. Horton was correct and sound and will throw some colors and calicoes I think. But the best 2 I saw at the open house and wrote down (for crossbreds) were Diamond and Stinger.

Re: What will 2018 show pigs look like?
2018 show pigs- will be even longer necks and tall shoulders. No fat on jowl. We will move away from the trend on gilts the past few years of filling them with so much body and mass it sacrifices movement. They got so fat if you were lucky enough to win, you'd be pushing it to get her burned off to ...

Feeding less than 4lb a day
After last summer's nightmare I had farrowing, I came to the conclusion I overfed my sows by a lot. I cut them back to 3.5lb per day through most gestation and this past week pulled them back to 2.5-3 lb a day. I want them around a body condition score of 2. Not starving but thin. They all look ok, ...

Re: Any Blue Print babies
We had a litter of them born last winter. Wanted mass and muscle from a boar and also some color. Delivered on all aspects we wanted. And they all could eat. Weak areas were pastern strength and cleanliness of hock. Makes them short bodied and thick also.

Re: Rusty nuts
Purely speculation but I wonder if it's just plain numbers of boars. They picked up several lately. Or semen quality could have went down as he got older. I posed the question about Fat Tire here a week ago. He is retired and just debuted. I suspect semen was bad. Idk. I really like red-u-mental. He...

Re: Brand new need help
Really helps to have a boar around. But no boar use spray. She should get to where she not only stands still, but locks up and will not move. Push her from behind and she's locked up. And her ears will "pop". That means they wiggle together upward regularly. Her vulva will be swelled for 2...

Fat Tire at Hi Point
Curious to see if anyone got their females bred out of this guy, Berk Boar Fat Tire at Hi Point. I ordered 2 doses. Got a 3rd for free and thought it was just a mistake. Gilt came back in heat. See on the website now that he isn't listed anymore. Wondering if that bonus dose was because tevstuff was...

Thanks for the advice. I'll try waiting longer on the second dose.

Re: 12 and 24 or 12 then 24?
They ovulate before they stop standing correct? Generally 36-40 hours after beginning standing?
I think most of our beginner breeder problems with this topic is not enough education about their mating cycles and several of us just learn by doing. (Myself included). Or learn by reading.

Re: 12 and 24 or 12 then 24?
Generally use 2 doses. Have used 3 and did the 12/12/12 on one and she returned 21 days later. HogDoc maybe try to shorten it to 18-20 hours after? I don't want a short window in there with no coverage. Do you guys think the ones standing 24 hours after the last dose will stick? Have seen them do th...

12 and 24 or 12 then 24?
Dumb question. Breeding gilts and I've missed a couple. Is the standard 1) observe heat and breed 12 hours later then again 12 hours after the first dose? Or 2) breed 12 after seeing heat and again 24 hours after the first dose? I have been doing 12 then 12 hours later and a couple have still been s...
