Re: Breeding for only 1 litter per year: Bad idea?
Late response but. Leaving them open causes them to release eggs each cycle. If you keep them bred they retain those eggs. I feel it keeps the sows productive longer. I agree keeps it easier to bred. When you have open for fewer days

Re: Purebred vs. Crossbred
I am sorry you did not get an answer sooner. I have a small operation that is mostly geared to my kids projects and other county fair's. In my opinion the F1 is the best females for show pigs. Last year we bred 3 sows to our above average herd boar. 2 very crossed up females from different cross bre...

Re: AI or live cover
We do both! The comments about AI to improve herd genetics to make better babies is absolutely correct. Also good market show gilts are not generally built correctly to naturally breed. Tail settings are usually straight along back for a square built package. Which in turn pulls there vulvas higher ...

What happened?
Have a Reg. Duroc sow that farrowed 6 piglets and raised them as a gilt. Rebred her to black exotic because that was the semen I had available due to missing the heat cycle with Duroc semen. Watched her progress in prego. 2 weeks started watching closer, noticed nothing in the bag or teats were chan...

Is the dependence of oxytocin just during this litter for milk or will she need oxy just to get contraction for future farrowings??

Re: swelling but not standing
We have a York gilt that did not cycle naturally. At 8mo we gave shot of PG600 she came in like a champ at day 5. Did not come into a full hard stand for the next cycle, little pink with some attitude is all. We ran boar with her for 10-15 min usually 2X day. Boar was interested but not excited on d...

Re: Kemo Sabe pigs
We bought and showed a Kemo Sabe Gilt. She is exactly as the guys above mentioned. Very complete with a big for arm and plenty of muscle. Great hip and very level top. Foot size was massive, but bone wise I'd say big enough. Wasn't a great eater she could of used a little more middle, Was third over...

Rectal Prolapse
At 11 weeks a Taylormade X (Starbuck x grims gem) gilt prolapsed. We had it surgically fixed, not sure of the exact stich (not purse). Had several stich's all the way around. I would suspect feed as the cause, all pigs in barn were pretty soft and had trouble with scour's previous year with same bra...

Teaser boar?
We kept a teaser boar from a feb 5th litter. We have been feeding him a sow gestation feed since about 9 weeks old. Now I'm just a little lost as to what to do. We have 3 sows and possible 2 show gilts to add to the herd. At 5 mo old he should be able to help me tell if my ladies are bred correct, t...

We have farrowed out 3 gilts this season with helpful information I have gathered from reading and asking questions in these forum's. It was a great success with litter size of 11 , 9 and 6. We found many new questions to find the answer to before next farrowing. Thank you Members for answering my s...
