Re: Draminski interpretation
You are correct the rising numbers are ovulation occurring. Hopefully you put in a dose and should have a stuck hog.

Curious to whether Prolate can be sprayed on a preg sow, and if there is any effects to the unborn litter? 60 days preg.
Thanks

Skin condition
So I have a pig. Only one is my show barn with a skin condition. He has had it for weeks, has been ivomected twice. Not greasy hog, not lice, not mange, not mites that can be seen. But has an allergic reaction to something. Lots of itching, some tiny red spots, no marks. His skin seems thicker, and ...

Restarting or conditioning a sow for breeding
I have a couple of older sows that either I missed with or are non cycling. They were all cycling this past summer or had a litter on them, but for some reason are not cycling now. One is a three year old hamo that bred as a gilt two years ago. Is there any recommend procedures out there to get thes...

Re: Propane heaters
Thanks for the response. So far I haven't been able to test how well the new heater works - it hasn't been cold enough. The pig body heat seems to be doing well. The 10000 btu Thermoblaster has not kicked on while I have been in the barn, and the outside temp has been low 30's. I have ceiling fans i...

Propane heaters
I have a 24 x 38 barn with a 8 foot ceiling. Built back in 1950's. Masonary block. I generally put in 14 sows in pens in the barn. Body heat does a good job of keeping most waterlines from freezing (pex lines to stainless steel cups) . I want to put in a wall mounted heater - propane, to add a littl...

Re: Gilt pregnancy
They will give a false pregnancy as they come into heat. Preg-tones are also good for finding heat cycles. Make sure you are pointing it at the right angle, many people will pick up on the bladder if aimed wrong. I find that my pregtone works best on the hogs that are heavy with pigs. You barely tou...

Re: Draminski numbers
Should be no need to check twice a day. Also make sure you have inserted the Draminski to the cervix edge - so that you are getting the same location for the reading each time. Readings will differ dependent on where the device is placed. I think after PG600 you will notice drops. Be aware that some...

Re: Draminski numbers
Numbers like that is one of two things - pregnant or not cycling. If not cycling hit them with some PG600 and then you will see numbers drop. As far as discharge. Not sure what you are seeing. But those numbers are not a cycling gilt or sow. '

Re: Draminski numbers
Delangworthy, I breed several breeds of hogs and like you some are just hard to tell. Obviously a lot of breeders just cull the hard breeders. This is where a Draminski is handy. For me a berk at 240 is too late for me, plus there may be some confusion to whether it is the down or the up end. I alwa...

Re: Draminski numbers
Csn2015, Based on those readings it sounds like your hog is at beginning of slow drop. My sows and gilts generally hit around 400, and then they slowly start creeping down. Usually around day 18 . You start to get around 240 range. Day 19 and 20 the numbers gradually drop below 200. Day 21 you botto...

Re: Starter Feeds
I have been using a creep feed by Purina under the Ultracare label. It is basically a highly ground corn mixture with milk by-products added. The pigs really like it while in with nursing sows. I have kept them on it after weaning. Runs about 25 dollars a bag. Not a pellet like so many other levels ...
