Swollen hock and lame....
I'd like to post a scenario and get some opinions from everyone to see how they would handle/treat the pig... Barrow, approx. 2 1/2 months old, no previous known issues....no problems noticed during afternoon feeding and chores, then a few hours later, is 3 legged lame. Right rear leg is completely ...

Pee pocket
We have a 2 1/2 month old barrow that has developed a pee pocket. What is everyone's best advice for these? Drain it everyday? Leave it alone to work itself out? If it's left alone, what are the chances of infection taking hold?

Weaned pigs with diarrhea. What would you do?
Hello all! We have a litter of pigs that have developed diarrhea over the last 24-48 hours. They are almost 7 weeks old and were weaned a little over 2 weeks ago. Demeanor, temperament and attitude haven't changed at all. Still very lively, tails curled, eating heartily. If you didn't know about the...

Re: How old is too old for gilts first breeding?
Wow. Sounds like you really have had quite a time with breeding. I'm sorry to hear about that. The frustration never seems to end. It certainly seems like anything happening in 2020 is just bound to have problems involved. Farrowsure Gold B is definitely a good idea. What were you using prior to tha...

Re: How old is too old for gilts first breeding?
We have a gilt that we just bred a little over a few weeks ago. She's almost a year and a half old (born 6/11/2019), and when we bred her, she settled, first time, no problem. She's had regular, steady heat cycles, and it's been easy to know when she was in heat. With everything you mentioned about ...

Re: when to breed
Having a teaser boar is certainly the easiest and most convenient. It's made things SOOO much easier for us since we got one. However, it's not always foolproof either...(we're dealing with this right now... ) Sometimes, even with a boar around, something else in their environment will affect...

Re: Sow won't stand
We've had a couple sows and gilts in the past that wouldn't stand as well. All other signs were there, indicating that the timing was perfect, but they just wouldn't stand and lock up. Anytime we've run up against this, as long as we were confident the timing was right, we would simply feed and bree...

Re: KGB - holding ration verification
Excellent! Thank you very much for the breakdown on all of that. Extremely helpful! I guess the only reason I mentioned the Ultra Full is because you suggested using it in the recipe, instead of the grower, in response to the original post. But I also understand that that was when weights and times ...

Re: KGB - holding ration verification
This pig is the backup to the other one in the original post, who is doing well on the Fitter 35/Depth Charge diet. However, it's going to be very close as to whether he will stay under the weight limit or not, so we want to make sure this second barrow is ready to go if need be. Some of the supplem...

Re: KGB - holding ration verification
Ok. That's about what I had figured. If I wanted to tighten that up to about 1 lb gain/day, would adding another lb of Powerfill, and subtracting a lb of Ultra-full do the trick? So, daily ration - 3 lbs Powerfill 1 lb Champion Drive 1/2 lb Ultra-full Would that combo still give him the daily nutrie...

Re: KGB - holding ration verification
KGB, for barrow #2 in this scenario, what should be the approximate daily weight gain on this diet? (Powerfill, Champion Drive, Ultra Full)

Re: Colorful Boars
I will say it surprises us but we bred an all black lock it up x hilbilly bone gilt to ghost at PBG expecting blue butts and ended up with 4 red belts 4 belts 2 white and 1 blue. Also bred him to a silver lining blue mask and had all belts and blues. All kids were very nicely sized and came on thei...

Excellent! Thanks again for the prompt response.
P.S. Not sure how I messed up the calculation, but thanks for the correction.

Another question for KGB
I'm trying to help a friend out with their pigs. They have 2 barrows who both weighed in at 277 yesterday. They have 35 days till show, and can max out at 300. They look really good, but could still use some back and rib shape. I know they can really only gain about 0.8 lbs/day at most, and could be...
