Re: ChronoMate vs Matrix
When you read the labels as I always do, the drug is Altrenogest in both products, and the strength is the same. I'd say save yourself some bucks.

Re: How old is too old for gilts first breeding?
Previously I used either Leptoferm or farrowsure Gold (not the "B"). I have always vaccinated for the usual suspects, Myco and Circo. Now I have added PRRS even though there have been no cases in my area and none of my pigs have shown any signs of illness of any kind, except that one boar ...

Re: How old is too old for gilts first breeding?
She cycled but never took. We had her with a boar the first number of times that later proved unproductive, and may have given her something, but I don't know what. Afterwards, we tried to A.I. her after the Matrix and P.G. 600, and again nothing. We now have 2 more that are just under a year and a ...

How old is too old for gilts first breeding?
Just wondered, I just butchered a gilt that was just over 2 years old and never took. Tried live cover and A.I., used Matrix and P.G. 600, all to no avail. She cycled, accepted the boars, just never got pregnant. I have heard that some people have successfully bred 1 1/2 year old gilts. I also raise...

Re: Use Cystorelin like Ovugel???
Yes, I know this would be "off label", I have been in the medical (human) industry for a very long time, and found that a lot of drugs are absorbed sub-lingually (under the tongue) as well or better than through the stomach. Since Ovugel is a form of GnRH and is absorbed in the cervix, why...

Use Cystorelin like Ovugel???
Since Ovugel is basically GNRH, and so is Cystorelin, I wondered if anyone has tried squirting Cystorelin into the cervix like Ovugel? Could it work the same way? I have a couple of sows that are way too needle shy to give injections to, so I wondered if this would work. I just cannot afford the Ovu...

Re: Blue eyed Berks
Most, if not all mammals are born with blue eyes. It takes a little while for the melanin to settle in the irises. I did taxidermy for many years, and was always surprised by the glass eyes for baby fawns and other animals being blue.

Re: HELP! Can't get pigs bred!
Yes, in fact I do not know of any in the town, although I am sure there are some. Some in a town about 15 miles from here. I bought a boar from there a few years ago, he sired one litter, although I put him in with all the sows at one time or another. That seems to be when the troubles started. Less...

Adding oxytocin to semen for better conception?
I have read and used oxytocin in the semen to improve conception rates. I wondered what else can be done this way?
GnRH? Would intrauterine absorption of GnRH increase or trigger ovulation?

Re: HELP! Can't get pigs bred!
I am in Southern Colorado. It's very dry here. Birds and mice are the primary culprits here. Thank you for the concise information, it is very valuable! There are very few serious pig breeders around here, so information like yours really helps. As I stated earlier, I have vaccinated for PRRS, some ...

Re: HELP! Can't get pigs bred!
Thank you for the advice buckibri! You stated that you use 400 grams of CTC added to feed, but how much feed? Per ton? Or is it 400 milligrams per pig? Since the powdered form of CTC is only available by prescription, would liquid (like LA 200) work if given orally? None of my pigs go anywhere, howe...

Re: HELP! Can't get pigs bred!
Thanks JWH, I had suspected as much, but my vet was sure that there were no infections in our area. That said, I am sure there are plenty of people around here with pigs that don't get them tested. I traced the problem back to the time I bought a new boar. Although I had him quarantined for 30 days,...

Re: HELP! Can't get pigs bred!
Add to above, All appeared bred over the summer, not cycling, even gaining weight. Most have passed their (assumed) due dates or they are coming up soon. None have been sick either. No PRRS in the area, so vet didn't recommend vaccinating against it. Considering treating for cyctic ovaries, but ALL ...

HELP! Can't get pigs bred!
I have 10 sows and a few new gilts. I do two crops of pigs a year, one for show season and another for market pigs. Last years show season breeding resulted in only half of the sows bred. The breeding for the summer market pigs was almost a complete bust! One older sow had a litter of 7, but only 2 ...

Cross to cross or purebred?
Hi, I've gotten a lot of different opinions on this question; should a crossbred (F3 or more) be bred to a purebred to have a more consistent litter, or does it really matter? Thanks
