Re: Night Vision
I helped dad show a boar in the class after that class, so I had the chance to see him up close. When looking at those top three boars in that class, I found him to be the more moderate, shorter patterned boar that was quicker in his maturity pattern. No question that he was the most massive, widest...

Re: New Yorkshire Boar From WPX
Nice purchase! I liked that boar a lot. I would make sure the female is opened up and square at the knee, he should do the rest!

Re: Hampshire boar to make pure females??
I am a real big fan of Man Amongst Boys. I really like the way his 50 lb pigs look when they are sold. Have not seen any at market weight but bet they would look good. This would not be my selection when you asked to use a boar to generate pure females. MAB paints them up as much as any Hamp boar I...

Re: 2014 Houston Grand Barrow Clones
You also have to remember that the boar is only supplying 1/2 the genetics to the progeny. And what gene expressions he supplies won't always be the same. Expecting these boars to generate pigs that looked like the Houston Champion is like asking a sire to produce hogs that look just like him. And w...

Re: New antibiotic rules Hog Doc, KGB, Darrin
My understanding is the use of medically important antibiotics will be phased out over time and will only be available for specific treatment needs. Disease prevention is being heavily criticized by many doctor and human health groups. It will only be a matter of time and this practice will be remov...

Re: Gilts are slow growers any suggestions????
I guess the first question I would ask is what is their water situation? Typically, low performance can be resolved by improving the water source and availability. Environment can also be an issue. (Poor ventilation, too cold or too hot) I'm never a big fan of blaming the feed for low performance or...

With this new rule, there will be no medically important antibiotics available over-the-counter.

Re: New antibiotic rules Hog Doc, KGB, Darrin
The first thing is to commend you for being proactive and talking this over with your vet. Everyone really needs to do this because the first important thing when these rules go into effect on Jan 1 is to have a valid Veterinarian Client Patient Relationship (VCPR.) I'm 100% with Colby these rules ...

Re: New antibiotic rules Hog Doc, KGB, Darrin
Unfortunately, your vet is like many other vets that don't think it will happen. For someone that works with this kind of stuff every day, there is no doubt the VFD regulation for medically important antibiotics in livestock feeds will start Jan 1 2017. If you are like me, a small swine producer, th...

Re: coughing pigs
If you are asking us what you should do, then you need to call your vet. Having a good Vet, Client relationship will help when you need assistance fast. You all are having the same weather we are having. We have had to treat several pigs so far for respiratory issues. It calls for a prescription dru...

Re: If you were to start your own purebred operation....
If I were to start all over, I would hope my wife would make me quit! Then we would take nice vacations, have spending money to use on us and the kids and I might be able to go golfing more! But seriously, that is a loaded question. I think I would have to take a long detailed look at my customer ba...

Re: Strange hog facility question
Typically the area least used. So if you have a barn that has poor ventilation, then they may lay in the more open air area and crap in the closed in area. Sometimes, small pigs will crap all over the place. As they grow, they will select a location of choice.

Re: Yorkshire Barrow Sires!
Probably a notch too quick in their pattern for my liking, but are extreme enough that if used right should put muscle and power in a set of yorks! I like the -2 boar better. The -1 boar doesn't track well enough off his rear legs for me.
