Re: Getting Started...........

I'd call some folks and look at their show barns. We have clients that use everything from old corn cribs to custom built barns. Ours is a converted dairy barn. As a result our pens are basically square. If I was building from scratch I'd do 12-14 ft long pens and make them 7 or so wide. Ray Tekippe...

Re: Not sure this is in right place, need guidance

Sounds like you have at least two buyers and at least the breeder wants to get her bought before she gets to a public auction. If it were me I'd want to find out how bad they want her and I'd forget about the pick of the litter. There are too many variables. Public auctions are made to determine pri...

Re: Inducing gilts? Current protocol

Since it's extra label follow the dose your veterinarian puts on the bottle. A second shot is where folks really get fired up. I still give 1/4 ml of oxytocin in the morning at 24 hours. It tightens the window of farrowing start and gets more pigs born during the day. We don't measure any difference...

Re: Inducing gilts? Current protocol

This is one of those topics I hate answering because folks seem to get pretty bent out of shape over it. Overall I would say we are inducing less than we used to and later. The upside of inducing is more supervised farrowings during the day and the downside is reduced pig performance compared to nat...

Cold laser therapy has been pretty effective in our hands.

Re: Pig Political Issues

ELD is probably the biggest current issue on the production side.
Tariffs and trade are pretty important from the meat side of the business.
Trent Loos wrote a good piece on ELD in the last Breeder’s Digest and the Pork Board or USMEF are your go to sources for trade.

Re: Vaginal Prolapse

There are folks that will want to debate this but the answer is almost assuredly Zearalenone.

Do yourself a favor and quit feeding ethanol by product if you are. At current grain prices you aren't saving much by feeding waste products.

Re: Duroc possible stress carrier???

It is a horse supplement. Sullivan sells it and it helps prevent lactic acid buildup in the muscles. If you decide to give it a try ping me and I'll give you the way we use it.

Re: Farrowsure/Flusure Combo

There is merit to the argument that adding more antigens will reduce the efficacy of the sum of the vaccine. But in this particular case the efficacy studies that Zoetis has presented seem to be solid enough for me to have confidence in all of the Flusure combinations they market.

Re: Duroc possible stress carrier???

A registered Duroc should not be a stress gene carrier but I know there are some carrier non papered Durocs for southwest barrow shows. This sounds more like one that is tying up from lactic acid buildup. There are some things you can do to help them. Our TrueGlo product helps a lot of these pigs an...

Re: Electrolyte supplement

The directions say to use up to 3 days before show/ transport. Can it be used longer to improve appetite or does it start to lose effectiveness after several days? Yes it can when we were doing trial work with it we had some pigs on it for 6 weeks without ill effects. They will not continue to incr...

We sure haven't found anything better than our TruePurple product. We just got a note from a customer that said " purple makes them eat everything you put in front of them. Then they'll eat the pen if you don't keep putting feed and water in front of them."
