Re: Retained piglet
This is my experience with retained piglets. One year, we bought some feeder pigs from a farm. Unbeknownst to us (and the farmer it turns out), all of the females came pregnant. These pigs were way too young to have been pregnant and giving birth. Most of them were problematic with retained pigs. We...

Re: My pig can't walk, we have tried everything
A diagnosis of polyarthritis sounds like it could be Mycoplasma Arthritis. What was the first antibiotic that the pig was on? I think Lincomycin is typically the antibiotic of choice for that. I had a young boar at one point that my vet thought may have had Mycoplasma Arthritis as he was very tender...

Re: Baby piglets what is warmer straw or bedding?
I make sure there's no draft where they're sleeping. We've got a corner of the stall designated for them with a board that separates their area from Mama's area. I usually use old towels/blankets and hang 2 heat lamps side-by-side. We secure the heat lamps with chains and make sure there's no way Ma...

I had something similar happen with one of my girls. With that gilt, it actually happened 2 months in a row. She cycled on day 34 or so. The third month worked for her, and she carried her pregnancy to full term.

Re: Sow shots?
Yes, you can give a nursing sow antibiotics.
We had a sow that had cut her vulva badly just after farrowing. She needed to be stitched, and we gave her antibiotics. We had used Excede (which requires a prescription from a vet). You could also try an over the counter antibiotic like penicillin.

Re: pre breeding vaccinations
Many folks use Farrowsure Gold (or Farrowsure Gold B) pre-breeding. The label on the bottle will have the dosage info, but I believe it's 5 weeks before breeding and the booster shot should be given 2 weeks before breeding. You may also consider giving a vaccination for Circo virus and Mycoplasma. W...

When the sow has passed two afterbirths, you'll know she's finished. A sow has 2 horns, and she needs to pass both afterbirths for you to know she's done from each horn.

Is his hoof/leg swollen? You might need an antibiotic to treat an infection. Banamine would help with inflammation as well. With a recent foot infection I've had, my pig had a swollen and cracked hoof, and she was limping. I soaked the foot in Epsom Salts each day. She had an infection so we also ad...

I mostly use the Ivomec injection, but sometimes I'll do the Safeguard mix in their feed.

Re: Adjusting to hand feeding
If you're worried about it and would like for her to clean her pan, you could try adding something into the feed like yogurt, oatmeal, canned pumpkin, etc. and mix it together. Unless you feel like she might have some other ailment, I wouldn't worry about it too much. She'll finish her food when she...

Re: Birth to weaning
This is what we do: - ear notch, castrate: 5-7 days after birth. We use the Barrier II Wound Care after ear notching and the Aerosol Bandage spray on the castrations. We don't use antibiotics for the procedures, just the sprays. - vaccinations: pick which vaccinations you'll give and follow the inst...

An anti-inflammatory, like banamine, would also help if she's limping. Good luck!

Re: Adverse Effects of Lincomycin 300 on gilt 3 weeks from AI?
These are just my opinions/thoughts. I wouldn't think the antibiotic would interfere with breeding. However, if she has a virus or bacterial infection, I would think that might interfere. Also, in my experience, you want to make sure you give Farrowsure Gold weeks before breeding. I've administered ...
