Re: Cleaning a sow previous to birth of pigs
We use the Hogwash solution as noted above. Don't need very much of it. ! cap for the top and another cap on your brush for the belly and you will get plenty of suds. Just be sure you rinse it all off.

Re: Pre Farrowing Gilt
3 days not eating.... temp her and make sure she is not sick. Vulva's do get very swollen, but usually soften up just before farrow Not eating---I would go ahead and look up the ulcer protocol and get her started on it. Don't need her to have an ulcer before she goes into a stressful situation (farr...

Re: Stressed pig
I would not give any carbonated drink as a top dress to feed for any reason now. Most shows have rules that explicitly state this is not allowed....even the 7-up trick. At majors with zero tolerance I would definitely not have alcohol test in urine. They probably can find alcohol more than they test...

Re: TransRite Sow Ultra??
My son did a pilot research project on this at Tarleton State. Not this exact product but another product that supplemented Calcium 5 days prior to farrowing via a top dress product. He was able to demonstrate a decrease in pig-to-pig intervals and an increase avg in the number of live births (I thi...

Re: Weight help please 14 days!
She likes water I would be wet slopping her feed and put 1 oz of Dyne or Dial N into the water that you use to wet slop with to add more calories.

Re: Breeding new stock
A family with a niche market of Large Blacks that are open ranged, organic fed, naturally bred bought some berk gilts from us last year. They bred these gilts to a young, never used before Large Black boar and every single berk litter had babies that were 3.5 to over 5 lbs at birth with only getting...

Re: How to get high litter counts with Gilt?
Not knowing what her baseline body condition score is (BCS), 7-8 lbs/day sounds excessive to me. Needs to be about 2.5 to 2.75 BCS. Immediately following insemination and for at least the next 30 days she should only get 4 lbs/day of feed so the embryos do not "burn" up with excessive calo...

Re: Duroc Sow Retained Piglet????
PCN is old school for me. You do have to give daily shots...off label amounts like the 20 cc/day dose so should be prescribed by your vet and it has a 50+ day withdrawal, and it is not broad spectrum. That being said I would strongly suggest 1) a broad spectrum antibiotic like Baytril that you can u...

I also like to stick the needle into the side of the neck that is farthest from me( in the rt side if I'm on the left). That way they jump/move into me and not away from me.

Re: Cooler malfunction hot semen
Put my cooler plugged into a surge/power protector so that if the power goes off, the cooler doesn't shut down and it stays at the set temp. If the power stays off for more than 4 hours, then I need to catch the fridge cause the battery backup is usually dead.
