Re: 4 Months out
We start hand feeding from day one just to train them to eat when and what we want. Then as they get bigger it is way easier to get them to consume more feed and to put on weight quickly. I would also agree that is worth the money to buy a quality feed and wait until later they get bigger to start a...

Re: Oats with hulls causing ulcers?
Pigs can not digest oats that are still in the hull. So feeding them is just a waste of money. Oat groats on the other hand are very beneficial.
Re: Tru Trac
We started when we brought them home. However we are probably a little bit fanatical about our pigs. I would imagine about 60 days out would be fine as they start to put on weight and get above 150Lbs
Re: Tru Trac
Absolutely Love True Trac. We switched from some very high priced joint supplements to True Trac last year and was very happy with the results

Re: SureChamp/TrueGlo/LungAid
In my opinion True Glo is the best product in this category on the market. We switch to it about 5 years ago and have never looked back. We have used a lot of products in the past but this is the best we have found.

Re: Housing
If you are raising them as show pigs I would keep them in the barn on the concrete and bedded in shavings except when you take them out to walk. We feed ours true trac as a joint supplement, there others out there you can use also.

Re: Tips
What are you feeding ? quality show feed makes a huge difference and show pigs need a completely different ration than butcher hogs. If you want to be competitive you need at least 4 things, Pigs with good genetic potential, fresh water, good environment (sounds like you are working on that) and a q...

Re: Need to hold pig.
You can feed Fitter 35 7-10 and hold them to little or no gain. Powerfill will keep them at 1LB per day and they will look great doing it.
Re: medicated
That is too funny !kgb wrote:I agree it's probably Tylan your local show is talking about. And even then it wasn't them, it was the FDA.
If your local show is indeed banning lysine, they should all be replaced with humans. ... preferably ones that have common sense.

Re: Tough Decision
That would be fine as long as you keep each group on the same feed brand you start them out on and do not switch them back and forth multiple times.
We personally feed Moormans but I have heard a lot of good things about Linder's
