you make the judgement

Post by RUNNGUN » Thu Jun 20, 2013 9:49 pm

Here is the Situation-
Have a County Fair on July 21st
2 Black belted Barrows
Weighed them on the 18th and sitting at 180#
Wormed them both in May and June

Fairly new to the show pig portion and learning more each and every day.
Got pigs from a guy I know that all they do is raise show pigs (name to be annomious--lol)

Started them out on 14.5% Protein (mellow) from Sunglo as they were very tight to start with so need some cover and loosen up.

But in that not gaining weight now they are structurally sound and looking great...need to hold the look but increase the size on them now.

Feeding 3 times a day mixing into 6# batches that consist of the following (not eating all 18 # so there is some carry over)

20% Protein feed w I believe 1.1% lysine
1 3/4 sumo added
1/4 tsp paylean ( think that makes a 6# batch of 4g paylean mixture- too early for the 9g)

What I am looking for is any input and remedies to get him to the 255-260# weight class hopefully as I think he may be able to win there.

Looking for input and Thanks a Bunch

31days to weigh in--gotta get him rollin!
would attatch pic but cant figure out on here by any means

I would think you could back down the protein a notch - maybe 18% at this stage
Also might be a bit too soon for Paylean - 3 weeks from show at the earliest

Sumo - 1 3/4 ? Cups? Lbs ?

If they're healthy and eating anywhere near what you're feeding them they should easily gain 2+ lb per day

How much fat %?

Are you weight by weight tape or scale?

You need to have another site to host your photos like photobucket. Then photobucket will give a direct link. Post the dirct link. May need to double check your link on here to make sure it doesn't require a password.

You won't see more growth by increasing the protein you actually will probably see less. Like KGB always says energy(fat) fuels growth not protein. If you lowered protein to soften and loosen them up I wouldn't be increasing it now since you say they look good, the same goes for the paylean some hogs just don't need it. You could go with paylean for the added growth it creates but I would stay at 4g if they are the type that could get tight on you.

The Sumo is added to 5 pods of feed at 1 3/4 cups not pounds--sorry
still on 20% protein as He is not too tight I dont think.
and yes at 4g on the paylean and I think the fat in the feed is at 4.5% if that sounds right ( its the mills mixture of his feed with show bloom or full bloom mixed in to get it to 20%)

Liking the comments guys and keep em coming love reading and learning

Weighing them on a scale
Paylean for the weight gain if it helps and may have to switch to 18% now that you say that--looking for even more input on that part.
Lysine is at 1.1% on that feed---how is that?

keep em comin

thanks
