How are small producers selling show pigs?
How are small producers selling show pigs?
Looking for ideas on setting up a sale. Not an auction. We are in our third year of larger scale production for us and last year was a nightmare. I want to sell on a certain date and am looking for ways to do this. Any ideas that have worked would be great. Thanks

I sell mine by allowing returning customers a first come first serve opportunity and then depending on weather try to give them a week to pick them up! I tell them the barn is open on this date and this time!!

I also allow my repeat customers to come on a first come first served opportunity. A week later I open the barn to all other prospective buyers. I also support a local FFA/4-H sale that has buyers from several counties and it helps develop more repeat customers.
Re: How are small producers selling show pigs?
We went to a board sale 3 years ago as we were having the same issues with who gets in first. It has been a great decision. We have created a more competitive selling process and have raised our average selling price for those pigs. We have our board sale set for Friday, April 3rd at 6:00 PM.
We included a Club Lamb breeder and a Market Goat breeder. That has been a really good combo. Many families feed multiple species and like when they can go to one sale and get all in one.

Can you explain a board sale? How does it work?
