Powerfill question

Post by td32281 » Mon Mar 07, 2016 11:08 am

I have a couple questions about using powerfill. If I want to limit a pig to around a gain of 1 lb/day, what weight would be the best time to do that? Around 200 lbs?

Also, how long can you hold gain with powerfill? Would 30 consecutive days be doable?

The answer to the first question is: it depends. It depends upon how many days are left until your show and what the pig weighs. You can feed Powerfill at anytime as a supplement. If you have 60 days or even more when the pig weighs 200 lb you probably should have starting slowing growth a long time ago.

My suggestion is to weigh the pig regularly and know what it is gaining. Then project what the pig weigh at your show. Then determine how much you need to slow the pig (if needed at all). 30 consecutive days is very doable.

Please send me an email at kgburgoon@landolakes.com and I will send some information on feeding Powerfill and managing weight gain.

I have well over 60 days until the target show. The barrow in question has just been gaining a lot faster than I expected so far averaging over 2lbs/day on 18% with steam rolled oats.

What is the soonest you would start limit feeding a hog? I'd like to try and hold him sooner than later so I can push more at the end, but don't want to start limit feeding him too early and do more damage than good.
