limited options

Post by abelkrista » Fri May 19, 2017 4:56 pm

We are new to pigs and live in rural area with limited options. Our feed store carries 509 and we are feeding this. We weighed in yesterday at 135#. We have 69 days until fair weigh ins and we have no max weight but can only get reimbursed for 300#. I understand that for a barrow 260-280 is a good target?
so I think he can gain 2.1 # per day? Is this right?
Does that mean I need to feed 4 # daily? My hog seemed to be on the heavier end of the 4h pigs weighed so I was a little nervous we are going to have to hold-and I am not sure how to do that?
any insight would be helpful. We are a bit stumped as we weighed him a month ago by holding and standing on a human scale and got 60# so I am unsure how with 2 bags of feed (1 509 and 1 309) he has over doubled in weight.
thanks again.

Your math is correct IF the weights are accurate. However, you really need to feed something else besides 509. At this size I suggest 809. If your feed store doesn't carry it, ask them to get it in for you. They get 809 from the same place they get 509.

Feed about 6 lbs per day. That is all the pig needs. The weight of your pig, the days until show, everything is about right so that you shouldn't need to slow growth very much if at all. By 6 lbs per day I mean hand feeding 3 lbs in the morning and 3 lbs in the evening feedings. Use a plastic feeder that hangs on a hog panel. If you use a round, rubber, black pan on the ground the pig is going to waste a lot of feed and you will be teaching it to keep it's nose on the ground in the show ring. By keeping the feeder up off the ground the pig will keep it's head up in the show ring for you.

If you should need to slow the pig down, use Powerfill. For 1.5 lbs per day gain feed:

Sorry, wrong key.

(TOTAL DAILY FEED; DIVIDE INTO 2 EQUAL MEALS):
HSC 809 2 lbs
HO Powerfill 2 lbs
HO Depth Charge 1/2 lbs (8 oz)

*Depth Charge keeps the pig fuller and rib expanded.
