Feed Question

Post by vtmaplegal » Tue Apr 01, 2008 6:01 am

I have 2 gilts, one is about 6 months old, and the other almost a year. I am getting a registered berkshire boar to breed them with. They feed the boar a combonation of equal parts soy bean meal, alfalfa pellets, corn, oats, and crushed beet pulp. They said they feed this combo to there pigs because they were feeding pig grower and there pigs were getting fat. I am having the same problem. My pigs are getting about 4 pounds of grain a day each (Combo of pig grower, alfalfa pellets, and once in a while a cup of whole corn). and they are getting heavy, expecially the pig that is a year old. Would you say the feed medly they are feeding to the boar would be good for my pigs?

Just my opinion...NO. I didn't see any mention of minerals and or vitamins. If you intend to breed gilts fed this diet, you will have problems down the line.

A good sow premix. One that has about a 100 lbs per ton inclusion rate. It might be a little less or a little more than 100 lbs per ton depending upon the company. But a solid sow premix will deliver the minerals and vitamins gilts and sow require daily.
