should i mix up some wet feed?

Post by BBattles » Thu May 08, 2008 10:39 pm

I have a belted cross bred gilt that can really do something as long as i get her between 270 and 280. I really need to push her and i was going to give her 20% protein and mix it with kent gold-cote which is electrolytes and cherry flavoring. Will this help to push her so she can get to that 280 so she can show at her full potential?

First we need to know what she is weighing now. How long to your show. what is your daily gain., and what king of condistion is she in. trying to finish one on 20 % protien is a little much. tens to make them to hard and tight.on most pigs but not all ways, probable need to be in the 16 to 18 %rangh , I would remove one pound of feed and add one pound of power fill by honnor show feed per feeding, you might want to introduce it alittle at a time up to one pound some times if you start with to much they dont like it. maybe some paylean depending on the animal. we use power fill in all our animals to finish with. Works great to push with. hope this helps. KGB will probable add to this or corect me he is the man.

Want to pass on a little good info that was given to me by a succesfull local show person. He starts putting in small amounts of Moorfat and some holding formulation months before the show. Just enough to get them used to the taste. That way when it's crunch time the pigs won't balk at the new food. This is probably a good idea for the powdered gatorade in the water too.

i wouldn't put her on full feed. feed her 2 to 3 times a day. give her just enough that all feed is eatten between feedings, it there is any left in her feeder then cut back a little. she will eat more this way because she will be hungry at feed time. by using this method you should be able to get 7-9 lbs in her a day. don't give her to much fat but i would add a little, this only adds energy to her diet causing her to eat less. mixing the feed wet will cause some to eat more, but not all will respond this way.

well that changes everything. forget what i just said until later. it would be helpful if you would give us a little more info. how many days to show? is this a market or breeding show? don't try to preplan how your going to feed her. you need to feed her based on her needs. at 60lbs just give her all she wants to eat right now. some like full feeding, but i like to hand feed twice a day. this allows me to monitor feed intake and to quickly act on any problems.

throw a self feeder in and toss a bog of feed in and let your pig go. If your pig is only 60lbs im guessing you have enough time until show to mess with him. Get the pig up to 150 and then take it from there.

I researched the kent gold-cote but all I find is a fat additive. You said it was electrolytes with cherry flavoring. I thought that it would be cool for my sows in my 100 degree weather. Can you please tell me the web site to find the electrolytes. Thanks
