Post by bp » Wed May 14, 2008 7:55 am

i have a pig i need to slow down gaining. the show is in 55 days, pig weighs 180 #. the pig is gaining 2.2 #/day for the last 16 days. we are feeding it 5# of feed/day. i am starting to feed straight powerfill. at what amount can i feed powerfill yet still keep fresh appearing and muscle expression? i need to average 1.8#/day gain for the next 55 days. thanks for your input

2lbs of powerfill and 2lbs of feed will get you around that range of weight gain. Works well for keeping them fresh and slowing them down a bit.

hampy622 is correct. You should get 1.5 or a little better with 2 lbs Powerfill and 2 lbs regular showpig feed per day. If you add Paylean that would add 0.3 - 0.5 lbs per day on that amount of feed. Which would get you close to your desired average daily gain.

If the pig needs a little help with rib shape, flank, or fill don't be afraid to add an additional 1/2 - 3/4 lbs per day of beet pulp. We soak the beet pulp in water first, drain the water and then add to feed.

that works very well if you need more fat you can add that to it also. Im going to be starting that ration soon to slow my pigs down just a little but to keep them fresh and not ruin them.
